HIV & AIDS Epidemic

Over 36 million people worldwide are now living with HIV, 95% of whom live in developing countries. 50% of them are women and children! In 2007 approximately 4.1 million people were newly infected with the virus. An estimated 25 million people have lost their lives in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 2007, 2.4 million died, of which 380,000 were children under 15 - most of them born with HIV. There are also alarming signs that many developing countries could be on the verge of serious epidemics. Across Asia, the epidemics are propelled by a combination of drug abuse and commercial sex.

According to a recent UN report, out of 36 million people who are infected with HIV, at least 10 million are in urgent need of antiretroviral drugs, but only 3 million of them have access to the treatment.
